A parent/teacher sign-up sheet will be coming home soon. Please select 3 times that are convenient for you. I will try and accomodate you the best that I can. This will be the last parent/teacher conference for the year so it is very important that you plan to attend.
Since attending the Teacher's College Reading and Writing Institute last week, I have been incorporating literacy into our enrichment classes. In social studies, we were in the middle of our "Important Americans" unit when I returned from New York. I decided to end the unit with the students writing a literary piece instead of our usual poster. The assignment was to pretend that they WERE this person, think about the important things that happened to them, then write a story about that important event (like it happened to them).

If you are absent today, look under articles and print off the chapter 5 vocabulary list. You will need to complete this before you return to class. Some will not have time in class to look up the words for 3rd and 6th hours because of class meetings.

We're celebrating Carnaval!! In the U.S., it is better known as Mardi Gras. We will be learning the origins and finding out how Spanish-speaking countries celebrate through the end of this week.
On Thursday, your student will probably come home and say "I need materials to make a mask!" There will be a couple of options for what costume pieces students want to make, but they will need to bring these materials on Friday, Feb. 12, to make their mask or other costume piece. We will work on these in class, but they may need to be finished at home over the weekend.
Then on Tuesday, Feb. 16, we will have a Carnaval feast! Students are in groups of 3, and have chosen a Carnaval food to make and bring in on this day.
These projects are intended to be culturally enriching and fun, and should not be too expensive or stressful on students OR parents. If there is any problem that could cause a student to be unable to contribute adequately to these projects, please let me know as soon as possible.
This Friday is a food day in Spanish 1. We will be discussing the Latin American origins and history of chocolate. To celebrate, students are paired or grouped and should be researching some creative ways to use chocolate for more than just cakes, brownies, or cookies. The foods do not have to be Hispanic foods, but there are many good recipes that are.
Students will bring their dishes on Friday and we will have a chocolate feast!
Having a hard time finding ideas? Try the Hershey's site:

And don't forget about Mexican Mole! I have a good recipe for that (with chicken).
This project should be fun and challenging, but it should not be expensive or cause any stress on students or parents. If there is any problem with a student being able to bring something or contribute to your group in some way, that student should please let me know.
