Meet Results & Meet of Champs recap

At the 55th Meet of Champs at Lake Hamilton High School, the Van Buren High School team set two school records and had several top performances.

Girls:

  • Rebekah Gibbons – 5th in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:21.72 which is a personal best
  • Maria Valente – 6th in the 3200 meter run with a time of 12:09.25 which is a personal best
  • Brittney Brasuell – 6th in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 46.12
  • Maria Santillana – 6th in the shot put with a throw of 35’ 0”
  • Shea Smith – 9th in the high jump with a jump of 4’ 10”
  • 4×400 relay(Brittney Brasuell, Shea Smith, Serena Shores, and Kim Fajardo) – 6th with a time of 4:12.17

Boys:

  • Jacob Eason – 2nd in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 39.75 which is a personal best
  • Victor Shores – 3rd in the triple jump with a jump of 44’ 10.5” which is a new school record
  • 4×400(Wacey Connor, Anthony Gibbons, Jacob Eason, and Victor Shores) – 2nd with a time of 3:23.29 which is a new school record

Alternate Assignment

Choose one of the following options.  Due Friday 5/18

ALL OF THE FOLLOWING OPTIONS MUST BE WRITTEN IN SPANISH AND THE FINAL PRODUCT MUST BE PRESENTED TO THE CLASS FOR A PRESENTATION GRADE.  ALL GROUP MEMBERS MUST SPEAK SPANISH IN THE PRESENTATION.

  • Newspaper: Create the front page of a newspaper that includes a description of the main characters, a description of the setting and the problem, and a summary of the story.  The newspaper page should also include at least two miscellaneous features: weather reports, an editorial or editorial cartoon, ads, etc. The title of the newspaper should be something appropriate to the book.

 

  • Use information from the story to make a scrapbook about the subject.  You should include: a description of the main characters, a description of the setting and the problem, and a summary of the story.  You also include at least two miscellaneous features.

 

 

  • Board Games. Make game boards (Chutes and Ladders is a good pattern, for example) by groups, using scenes/settings from the story and problems from the book as ways to get ahead or to be put back. You should include at least 7 “locales” from the story and at least 30 things that happened in the story as the “problems” or questions cards.

 

  • Collage/Poster. Do a collage/poster showing pictures or 3-d items that related to the book, and then write a sentence or two beside each one to show its significance.  You should have at least 30 picture/sentence combinations.

 

 

  • Write a 25 line poem about the story.  Be sure to include all of the “main ideas” from the story.

 

  • TV Reporter. Be a TV or radio reporter, and give a report of a scene from the book as if it is happening “live”.  You should include: a description of the main characters, a description of the setting and the problem, and a summary of the story.  You also include at least two miscellaneous features.

 

 

  • Book Jackets. On the ‘cover’ they illustrate a cover for their report. On the inside flap write a description of the main characters. On the inside back flap write a description of the setting and the problem. On the back ‘cover’ write a summary of the story.

 

  • Timeline. After reading, make an illustrated timeline showing events of the story and draw a map showing the location(s) where the story took place.  You should include at least 30 of the “main ideas” from the story on your timeline.

 

 

  • Write a Song. Write and perform an original 25-line song that tells the story of the book. Be sure to include all of the “main ideas” from the story.

 

  • Miniature Stage. Build a miniature stage setting of a scene in the book. Write a short play that acts out that scene from the story.  Include a paper with your project that tells the events leading up to the scene and the events that happened as a result of your scene.

 

 

  • Create a Comic Book. Turn the story into a comic book or graphic novel, complete with comic-style illustrations and dialogue bubbles.  Include all of the “main ideas” from the story.

6A State Meet Results

At the 6A state track meet held Friday, May 4, at Lake Hamilton High School, the girl’s team finished 4th overall and the boys team finished 7th overall. Brittney Brasuell won the 300 meter hurdles with a new school record time of 45.39 seconds and the relay team of Wacey Connor, Anthony Gibbons, Jacob Eason, and Victor Shores won the boys 4×400. Victor Shores also placed 2nd in the triple jump with a new school record jump of 44’ 3.5”.
