February 7th, 2010 by arogersIn Reading Workshop we are studying Non-Fiction Text Features. During this study students learn the purpose of these features and how the reader can use these features to assist in comprehension. For example, the headings help us know the main idea of a page or section. Photographs help us to see what something actually looks like. Captions help to explain the picture. The Table of Contents tells what information can be found inside the text and how it is organized. These are just some of the features included in our study.
During Writers Workshop we are transferring our knowledge of Non-Fiction Text Features into our All-About Books.
To transfer this knowledge to real world application ask your child to pick up a newspaper or magazine and discuss what text features they can identify.
