Math
We are wrapping up our first unit this week!?There will be a unit test on Friday.?We will have a review with a study guide on Thursday.?This has been a long unit with a lot of information in it.?Focus areas that always cause the students trouble on this test would be the difference between factors and multiples and how to find factors and multiples.?Please be sure to review these concepts with your child.?The test will also include two-digit by two-digit multiplication and some division.
Science
This week in science we are going to perform a chromatography lab where we will separate pigments contained in leaves.?We will be having a science test on Thursday that covers cells.?There will be a review sheet going home Wednesday.?
Student Council
The Student Council Representatives for my homeroom are Alex Barlow and Braylee Berry!? Congratulations girls!

Welcome Back Students!

Math & Science
For math and science this week we will be focused on prepping for the Benchmark Exam.?We will take mock tests to practice using the answer sheets and to see the format of questions that will be on the Benchmark.?We will also practice a lot of open response questions.?Students, you need to come prepared to work hard this week, we have a lot to do!!!

News
The Night of the Living Museum was an instant hit!?We have been bombarded with praise about how well the students portrayed their parts and how professional they were throughout the day!?Congratulations to all of them!?We are so very proud of them and hope they enjoyed it as much as we did!?Thanks also to all of the parents that donated items, money and a LOT of time, it would not have been possible without you!

Math
Fractions, fractions, fractions!?We continue to learn different methods and strategies for adding and subtracting fractions.?Everybody loves fractions!???
Science
This week we started our unit in science on rocks and minerals.?We made rocks in science lab using clay, gravel, sand, mystery minerals and some other ingredients.?In the near future we will become geologists and inspect the rocks we made and identify the mystery minerals they contain.?Next week we will learn how to do a streak test, a hardness test and how to identify luster.??

Math
This week for math we will be learning about adding fractions.?We will use different methods and tools to add fractions such as fraction strips, clocks, and games.??
Science???
In science, we will begin studying rocks and minerals!?This is a very fun unit with lots and lots of lab work!?We will start out by listing properties of unknown rocks and minerals and we will finish the unit by identifying unknown rocks and minerals using different types of tests and their properties.
Homeroom News
What a great end to 2008!?My homeroom class was recognized by the school at an assembly for bringing in the most food items in our food drive this year!?Congratulations to all of my students and thanks to all of you Moms, Dads and Grandparents for your contributions!?A lot of families had nice meals this holiday because of your help!
Mr. Dean?s homeroom class lined up in the hallway to deliver over 300 food items on the final day of the food drive!

This week for math we will be doing some review of the fraction concepts we have learned so far and taking a mid-unit test.?We will continue with fractions when we return from break.?A review page will go home before the test.???
Science
In science, we will review and have a test on matter.?As always, there will be a study guide the night before the exam.
Homeroom News
My homeroom Christmas Party will be Thursday December 18th at 9:00.?Mrs. Hawkins has been generous enough to offer her services for organizing the party.?An information sheet went home with the students about this party with her contact information on it.?If you have questions feel free to contact me!?We will be making a surprise for parents on Monday in science lab which you will receive toward the end of the week.?We will also be making (and eating!) gingerbread houses on Tuesday, December 16th.

In science lab today, we got hands on with some matter.? Using applesauce, cinnamon, glue and cookie cutters we created a soft dough and formed it into Christmas Ornaments.?
