Basketball Teams are on the Move

Basketball Homecoming 2012

Basketball homecoming was held on January 13th. During the week, students and faculty showed their pointer spirit by participating in dress themes throughout the week. The dress themes involved were Pajama Day, Camo Day, Senior Citizen Day, Jersey Day, and of course Green & White Day. This was a fun way to participate in the spirit of homecoming.

We crowned the 2012 Basketball Homecoming Queen. After the student body voted throughout the week, Stephanie Carter received the crown of pointer royalty. Also during the pep rally, the student body got a look at the entire pointer basketball team (Varsity, JV, and 10th grade) and the pointer bowling team. The pep rally ended the usual way with everyone singing our Alma Mater.

Later that evening, the VB Pointer faced off against LR Catholic in an intense, heated, game. It was a back and forth battle that was hard fought by both sides. The final score was 52 to 48 with our Pointers taking the victory! It was an awesome moment as the final buzzer had sounded; everyone came down to the floor to celebrate. It was a great way to cap off a great Homecoming week. By Kevin Knight

VETERANS DAY ASSEMBLY

On November 11, 2011, Van Buren High School held thier annual Veterans Day assembly.  During the assembly Libby Hilliard read the
paper she wrote that talked about lessons of nobility.  Quinton Ray read about why men serve in uniforms.  Both of the students are from
Mrs. Deans Honor’s history class.  Van Buren congratulated and recognized all the men and women currently in
service and all who are retired veterans.  The band and boys choir got together and performed songs to thank all
the people who have served for our country.  Major Mike Akins stressed the importance of our country and how we show
respect for the U.S Military.  After the assembly the FCCLA provided the veterans and thier families with refreshments.

T412 REACHES OUT

Van Buren High School’s T412 first reach out was volunteering at the River Valley Regional Food bank. The food bank has been serving the community for years and has provided food products to over 210 hunger relief agencies. The food bank also distributed 4.3 million pounds of food and grocery related products. Two Van Buren High School students, Ashley Zulch and Chelsea Needham, spent their morning helping out.  VBHS’s Own Melinda Smith and her husband Clarence smith helped all of the volunteers at the food bank. When I asked Chelsea how Volunteering made her feel she said, “It made me feel really good to know that I was helping and I was making a difference. I would definitely do it again!” If you are interested in getting a group together you can call (479)-785-0582 or email Clarence Smith

POINTER FOOTBALL WRAPS UP SEASON

The Pointers football might not have had the best record this past season. But it was much more than numbers to the seniors.  Throughout the last few seasons since they were sophomores, there has been a brother hood grown between each one of the players. Each of the seniors probably wishes they had it back already, but for those that it hasn’t hit them yet it will in about 10 or 15 years. By playing high school players and connections that they will never forget and they will never want to forget.

Cole Plunkett recently earned the Hooten’s magazine’s athletic scholar of the week.
This is an honor for any athlete in the state who has the highest G.P.A. at
his/her school and also an outstanding athlete, week in and week out. Chris
Hooten, founder of Hooten’s magazine, hand picks the athletes to be chosen each
week. He came to our field the night of the honoring and introduced Plunkett’s
award to him. The sponsor of this award is the Army National Guard and they
donated many ANG water bottles to the Van Buren football team for each player.
We are proud of Cole Plunkett for his willingness to work hard on the field,
but most importantly in the classroom.
